SOUTH PLATTE BASIN September, 1997
Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 4.0 indicates that for August the SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN
>lasin water supplies were well above normal. Reservoir 5 &"'«Water Supply Index"Iptary
storage, the major component in this basin in computing the ,_
SWSI value, was 124% of normal as of the end of August. _ -y iStorage in the major plains reservoirs: Julesburg, North 3 . ;` 1Sterling, and Prewitt, decreased by 16,858 acre-feet during 2 wLa -August and are at 57% of capacity. Storage in the major f. ' --- -upper basin reservoirs: Cheesman, Eleven Mile, Spinney, and ! D " - '' -
Antero, decreased by 2,000 acre-feet and are at 93% of -
capacity. The mean daily flow of the South Platte River at the
a -2—
Kersey gage was 2,397 cfs, as compared to the long term
average of 762 cfs. Flow at the Colorado/Kansas stateline -3-
averaged 1,923 cfs,compared to the long term average of 153. --, i -. •••- • .. ....... .—
JAMB JAMS JAN90 J0161 JAN92 JAN93 JAN94 JAN95 JAN96 JAN97
The flow in both the tributaries and South Platte MONTH,YEAR
mainstem continued at higher than average levels during
August due to extremely wet conditions during much of the
month. These wet conditions served to increase flows in the
AIM
stream but at the same time reduce demand for these flows "_"
for irrigation and other purposes. The flow levels were SOUTH PLATTE RIVER NP. The high stream flows allowed'the-refilling of some i 2
reservoirs which is also very unusual. As a result, reservoir : 1.B
levels are very high for this time of year. a ,.6 ' -
9—
1.
Outlook s 1
Remaining irrigation demand will drop off during 1
September as crops begin to be harvested. The main concern
0-.
at this point is that temperatures-are warm enough and the 0.2 •
weather dry enough to allow crops to.finish growing and D -
Oct Nov D•c Jan Feb March AprII May June July Aug 5•Pt
farmers to get into their fields for harvest. . ,C.,T„
The excellent reservoir carryover and significant (19C3) o DRY(1964) a AVG x 1997
recharge now occurring will provide for a good start to next
year's supply. It is expected that reservoirs that are not
already full should be able .to fill this winter without
significant difficulty.
