However, rains in early July helped
to improve conditions in the western half of the basin. Water supply conditions vary significantly throughout the basin.
Although Blue Mesa Reservoir is storing approximately 105% of normal, the vast number of smaller high elevation
reservoirs did not fill this runoff season. Soil moisture has remained low all year increasing irrigation demands.
Cumulative flow at the key index gaging station, Uncompaghre River near Ridgway, is approximately 30%below normal
but above the minimum flow recorded in 1977.
Outlook:
Water supplies will remain short throughout most of the basin. Above average precipitation would be required to
bring conditions back to normal.
Administrative/Management Concerns:
The south side of Grand Mesa has been under strict administration since early May. The northwest section of the
basin, including Grand Junction and the southwest section of the basin, including Norwood, have conditions that are
becoming worse. Recently completed, Ridgway Reservoir began physically spilling June 9, 1990, providing the
Uncompaghre Valley Water Users with sufficient flow to not require that a call be placed. To partially offset late season
drought conditions, the Tri-County Water Conservancy District, in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation, has made
available surplus water to other users. The Division 4 Engineer is providing technical assistance to ensure that all
water transfers are carried out correctly and that senior rights are protected.
Public Use Impacts:
Water-based recreation has been sustained at Blue Mesa Reservoir and in the Gunnison River below the reservoir.
SURFACE WATER SUPPLY INDEX UNCOMPAHGRE RIVER NR.
