2.0 INTRODUCTION
2.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This report presents the findings of a study of the ground -water resources in the
Southern High Plains Designated Ground Water Basin (Basin), for the Southern High
Plains Ground Water Management District (District). This study is the second phase of
an overall assessment of the District's use and supply of ground water to assist the
District in developing future management policies for the remaining ground -water
resources in the Basin.
The Basin is located in southeastern Colorado south of the Arkansas River Basin and
encompasses portions of Prowers, Baca, and Las Animas counties in Colorado. The
study was commissioned by the District and began on July 1, 2001. The Colorado
Water Conservation Board provided the funding for the study. The Colorado Division of
Water Resources provided project oversight on behalf of the District.
The principal objectives of the Phase 2 study were to:
1. Refine the conceptual model of the Basin aquifer system that was developed
in the Phase 1 Study by obtaining and evaluating additional well logs from the
Division of Water Resources.
2. Define the general hydrogeologic properties and geometric relationships
between the aquifers to facilitate the management and administration of the
ground -water resources in the District. Accomplish this by reviewing
available published information, and developing geologic cross-sections and
maps of each aquifer
3. Determine the economically recoverable volume of ground water in each
aquifer from the development of saturated thickness maps and estimates of
specific yield and average sandstone/siltstone thickness in each aquifer.
4. Develop options for the administration of existing and new wells for each
aquifer in the District.
The information gained from accomplishing these objectives was used to complete the
following major tasks for the District:
II -1
99-028.003\Phase 2 Report\ SHP Introduction
