1. Assessed the accuracy of the State Engineer's Office well data base with
respect to the District.
2. Identified four distinct hydrostratigraphic units in the Basin that separately or
in combination comprise two to four aquifers depending upon location,
degree of separation by intervening shales, and use by individual and
multiple completion zone wells — Ogallala, Dakota, Cheyenne, and Dockum,
in descending order.
3. Determined the elevation and thickness of the aquifers by examination of
selected well records; and determined the corresponding intervals of
screened perforations to delineate the source aquifers(s) of each well.
4. Confirmed the distribution of the District's monitor wells as adequate to obtain
accurate water levels in the aquifers of the District.
5. Identified the areas of concentrated agricultural development within the
District that may benefit from additional management.
6. Quantified the actual water use in the District to predict future water -level
declines.
7. Verified the hydraulic connection between the main aquifers to quantify the
migration of water between the aquifers, as much as possible, using available
information.
8. Estimated the demand for future use of water in the District.
9. Identified the sites of known water quality contamination for future mitigation.
The MWE report presented an assessment of the geology in the area, history of water
development in the district, and associated changes in the ground water levels within the
District along with conclusions and recommendations for consideration by the District.
At the January 2001 annual meeting of the District, the Phase 1 study was accepted. At
that meeting the District members voted to authorize a Phase 2 study to further assess
and delineate the available water resources within the District. MWE was subsequently
contracted by the District to assess the hydrogeology and develop management strategy
alternatives for the District. This report addresses the findings of this third investigation.
11-5
99-028.003\Phase 2 Report\ SHP Introduction
