1\
WATER LEVELS IN THE SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS
DESIGNATED GROUND WATER BASIN - 1997
The purpose of this report is to provide 1997 water level measurements from monitoring wells
in the Southern High Plains Designated Ground Water Basin. The project is ongoing, with the
cooperation of local well owners as well as the Southern High Plains Ground Water Management
District (SHPGWMD). Funding for the project is provided in part by utilizing revenues generated
by Senate Bill 200, passed during the 1987 legislative session. Well measurements of water
levels were conducted by the SHPGWMD under contract with and supervision by the Colorado
Division of Water Resources (DWR). Additionally, in 1996 and 1997, exact locations of well
structures were obtained by utilizing GPS units (see Well Locations section). The plotting of this
1997 map of monitoring well locations was done by GIS techniques utilizing the 1996 GPS data.
In the 1997 measuring period, a total of 72 well sites were visited, including two measurements
from the Town of Springfield. Three wells were not measured because they were pumping.
Nine new wells were added to the network in the 1996 measurements (see 'Remarks').
Measurements were made starting February 1, 1997, and were completed by February 21,
1997.
The aquifer designations used on the following hydrographs, data sheets and figures are as
shown in the following Table 1.
Table 1 - AQuifer Descriptions
' Arithmetic average of monitored wells. ** estimated - no data available.
*< = slightly less than
*> = slightly greater than
limestones, and red to buff,
fine to coarse sandstone.
Avg.
