WATER LEVELS IN THE SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS
DESIGNATED GROUND WATER BASIN - 1999
The purpose of this report is to provide 1999 water level measurements from monitoring
wells in the Southern High Plains Designated Ground Water Basin. The project is ongoing,
with the cooperation of local well owners as well as the Southern High Plains Ground Water
Management District (SHPGWMD). Funding for the project is provided in part by utilizing
revenues generated by Senate Bill 200, passed during the 1987 legislative session. Well
measurements of water levels were conducted by the SHPGWMD under contract with and
supervision by the Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR). Additionally, in 1996 and
1997, exact locations of well structures were obtained by utilizing GPS units (see Well
Locations section). The plotting of this 1997 map of monitoring well locations was done by
GIS techniques utilizing the 1996 GPS data.
In the 1999 measuring period, a total of 83 well sites were visited and 82 wells were
measured, including two measurements from the Town of Springfield. One well was
pumping and 3 wells had recently pumped prior to this measurement period. Two wells were
reported as being very oily. Measurements were made starting January 6, 1999, and were
completed by March 30, 1999.
The aquifer designations used on the following hydrographs, data sheets and figures are as
shown in the following Table 1.
