WATER LEVELS IN THE SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS
DESIGNATED GROUND WATER BASIN —2001
This report of the 2001 water levels in the Southern High Plains Designated Ground Water
Basin is the 12th of a series of annual reports. The measurements were accomplished
primarily in early March, 2001 by experienced personnel of the Southern High Plains Ground
Water Management District (SHPGWMD).
The well locations, where identified by the Public Land Survey System (Township, Range
and Section), were obtained from well permit information primarily. Location information
given in terms of the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system was obtained by a GPS
(Global Positioning System) survey conducted by SHPGWMD personnel. All well locations
reported by GPS survey were assessed utilizing an "averaging" technique. The averaging
technique, as well as the lack of Selective Availability (SA -the intentional jamming of GPS
signal terminated in May of 2000) provided GPS surveyed locations more accurate than
previous estimates. GPS locations still need to be topographic map verified. The GPS
survey locating of wells will be a continuing operation concurrent with water level
measurement.
A total of 18 additional wells were added to the monitoring network this report year in order to
provide better coverage within the basin. The choice of additional wells was guided by
recommendations in the McLaughlin Water Engineer's report "Hydrology and Water
Resources of the Southern High Plains" (January, 2001). Decisions and well selections in
the field have resulted in different wells from those meeting the McLaughlin report criteria
being selected. Consequently additional wells should be added in subsequent reports in
