WATER LEVELS IN THE SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS
DESIGNATED GROUND WATER BASIN — 2003
This report of the 2003 water levels in the Southern High Plains Designated Ground Water
Basin is the 14' of a series of annual reports. The measurements were completed primarily
before and during early March, 2003 by experienced personnel of the Southern High Plains
Ground Water Management District (SHPGWMD).
The well locations, where identified by the Public Land Survey System (Township, Range
and Section), were obtained primarily from well permit information. Location information
given in terms of the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system was obtained by a GPS
(Global Positioning System) survey conducted by SHPGWMD personnel. All well locations
reported by the GPS survey were assessed utilizing an "averaging" technique resulting in
reported locations within +1-10 meters of their true locations. The averaging technique, as
well as the lack of Selective Availability (SA -the intentional jamming of GPS signal
terminated in May of 2000), have provided more accurate GPS surveyed locations than
previous estimates. GPS locations still need to be topographic map verified. The GPS
survey locating of new wells will be a continuing operation concurrent with water level
measurement.
A total of 95 wells were monitored this report year providing adequate coverage within the
basin pursuant to recommendations of the McLaughlin Water Engineer's report
"Hydrogeology and Water Resources of the Southern High Plains" (Phase 2 Study).
