This report contains the basic ground water feel data collected in the Upper Big
Sandy Designated Ground Water Basin during the period from February 1991
through February 240. Acquisition and publcation ot this infarmation is a
cooperative effort befirveen the Upper Big Sandy Ground Water Management
District and the Colorado Division of Water Resvurces. The project is part of a
statewide ground water leel monitoring rogram funded by Senate Bil! 200 (1987
legislatie session}. This legislation directed ihat a portion of the fees colfected for
water weli permits shall be used for the establishment of a program to monitor
water levei trends throughout the state.
The wells in this report are listed by township, range, and section, beginning at the
north end of the basin and proceeding south. The division is in the process of
verifying the Iocation of all of the wells measured with a satellite based global
positioning system (GPS}, That location information in UTM grid format has been
incuded where availabfe. All wells in the next year's report will show locations by
IJTM grid coordinates.
Included in the report are water IeE measurements and hydrographs of 24 wells
monitored on a regular basis. Mr. Glenn Graham of this office took water leel
measurements in these wells during February 1999. Additional we11s in the town of
Ramah and in the town of Limon's Christopher Well Filed will also be added to next
year's report.
23 wells were measured for this year's report; 1 well was pumping and was not
measured. nly one of these wels showed a water levei decline of 0.97 of a foot
from last year. The remaining 22 wells measured showed increases in water leels
from fast year ranging from 0.03 of a foot to 3.32 feet. The aerage change in
water level fvr the 23 wells measured was an increase of 1.5'l feet. Water leels in
22 of the 24 wells are currently higher than they wee when monitoring began in
the Upper Big Sandy Management District in 1991. The overall trend from 1991 to
200 shows an average increase of 2.52 feet, or apprvximately 0.28 of a foot per
year. Although fall and winter of 1998 was relativeiy dry, a wetter than normal
summer of 1997 and the heavy snow fall in Octvber 99? coupled with heay rains
in the {ate summer of 199g have resulted n the oerall rise in water ieels since
991.
The information in this report was compiled, edited, and prepared for pubiication by
Gkenn Graham.
Copies of this report are made avaifabfe to well owners and the District tree of
charge. Addi#ional copies may be ob#ained from the Colorado Division of Water
Resources, Public Records Section for $1.5D each. The Records Section can be
contacted at 1313 Sherman Street, Room 8' 8, Dener C $0203, or by phone at
343/86fi-3581 or 303I86S-3447.
