INTRODUCTION
This report contains the results of water level measurements of wells in the Northern High
Plains Designated Basin made during the winter of 2001-2002. Data were collected in
cooperation with the W -Y, Frenchman, Central Yuma, Sand Hills, Marks Butte, Arikaree and
Plains Ground Water Management Districts, and local well owners and users. Funding for this
project was supplied in part from well permit fees collected and managed by the Office of the
State Engineer as a result of the passage of Senate Bill 200 during the 1987 legislative session.
This bill authorized the Office of the State Engineer to establish and maintain a water level
monitoring network throughout the state to obtain information on ground water conditions, to
establish ground water trends and to manage the ground water resources of the state.
The report format was extensively revised last year to better serve the user of the data.
First, the database was converted into Microsoft ACCESS from the old dBase III database.
Changes were made in the report layout so that it is easier to read with all the well identifying
information contained in a header. This year, saturated thickness data for 1965 and present have
been added for most wells. Also included is an estimate of the % of the 1965 (pre -development)
saturated thickness. Within the next few years, the header will also contain the actual well
location determined with the use of a Global Positioning System. The use of the new database
has allowed us to display water level changes for one, five and ten year intervals and include a
hydrograph of each well for the period 1988 to present. These will be included and updated each
year. Also included are long-term hydrographs of approximately 30 wells that have been
monitored for over 30 years. In the back of the report is a map showing the water level change
throughout the basin for the last 10 years. In the future, we hope to have the data used in a GIS
application so that additional maps can be produced.
The report is organized by Ground Water Management District and sorted by location
within the district.
Copies of this report are available for inspection in the offices of the local ground water
management districts as well as the Office of the State Engineer. Copies can be purchased from
the Office of the State Engineer, 1313 Sherman Street, Room 821, Denver, Colorado 80203 for a
fee of $ 25.00 to cover the cost of printing and handling. Summary reports will be made available
at no cost to each well owner whose well was measured. These summary reports are available
from the local districts or from the Office of the State Engineer.
