Lost Creek Designated Ground Water Basin
2003
This report represents the results of water level measurements of wells in the Lost Creek
Designated Basin made during the month of February 2003. The project was done in cooperation
with the Lost Creek Ground Water Management District and local well owners. Funding for this
project was supplied- in part from well permit fees collected and managed by the Office of the
State Engineer as a result of the passage of Senate Bill 200 during.the 1987 legislative session.
Twenty of the 21 monitoring wells in the basin were .measured. All of the wells showed
water level declines. The average decline for the past year was 2.99 feet. This compares to an
average decline of 2.36 feet last year. The average 'decrease for the last five-year period was 0.7
feet per year, and for the last ten-year period, a decline of 0.46 feet per year. Overall the water
level trend for the basin has been increasing since the mid 1970's; but has reversed due to the
past several years of below normal precipitation. Generally north of Interstate 76 the water levels
are within 20 feet of the surface with a few within two feet of the surface. Between Highway 52
and Interstate 76, water levels are within 40 feet of the surface. Water levels south of Highway 52
range from 40 feet in the northern part to over 100 feet in the southern part of the basin.
Tabular and graphical data are presented for each well for the entire period of record. At least
one of the wells dates back to the 1930's.
Copies of this report are being made available to well owners for their assistance in this
project. Additional reports are available from the Office of the State Engineer, Records Section,
313 Sherman Street, Room 818, Denver, Colorado 80203, (303) 866-3447.
