As you know, Climax manages this facility for the delivery of water
from the Storke facilities to the Climax water treatment system. You are also aware that
the grated `mousecatcher' within the concrete delivery flume requires extensive
maintenance during peak snowmelt conditions.
Climax has recently developed a design to reduce risk of flume overtopping during
snowmelt. Pursuant to Rule 7.3.1 of the Mineral Rules and Regulations, the attached
design for modification of the SWWPS is presented for your review and acceptance.
The design considers management of debris that is conveyed in the flume during peak
flow and caught at the grated `mousecatcher'. Current delivery of water into the ponds
occurs near the pump inlet area of the pond storage system. The modification consists
of a conveyance to the back of the storage ponds, allowing settling of suspended debris
away from the pump inlet manifold. The conveyance will be constructed with two
components: an open lined ditch to capture surface flows, and an HDPE pipe to route
flume flows. The southern portion of the existing flume will be maintained with much
reduced flows and increased maintenance capability.
Thank you in advance for your review. I can be reached at (719) 486-2150, ext. 723 if
you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Bryce R. Romig
Environmental Coordinator
Climax Mine
