A
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources POW74,
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX-(303)832-8106
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
DATE: April 27, 1997
/ Roy Romer
Governor
1/,TO: File No. M-7 7-4 9 3 James S Lochhead
Executive Director
I/ ROM: Allen Sorenson Michael B.Long
Division Director
RE: ) Assumptions Necessary to Complete Preliminary Cost Estimate
j/ for Structural Demolition at the Climax Mine
In a memorandum dated November 16, 1993 prepared by Tom Gillis, the
Division provided Climax Molybdenum Company (CMC) a list detailing
information required to facilitate cost estimation for structural
demolition at the Climax Mine. CMC' s response package dated April 1,
1994 provides most of the required information, and this information is
the basis for the Division' s preliminary estimate of demolition costs .
Where data gaps existed, certain assumptions were incorporated into the
preliminary estimate . This memo details these assumptions, and
illustrates what type of information will be needed to refine the cost
estimate .
1 . There is no information in the 4/1/94 CMC response package
detailing the thickness of concrete slabs for the various
buildings at the Climax Mine. These thicknesses were estimated
for the purpose of the preliminary cost estimate . The thicknesses
estimated are based on the size and use of each building, e .g. ,
mill or crusher buildings would have thicker slabs than small
dispatch shacks or office buildings . If CMC provides data on slab
thickness, this aspect of the demolition cost estimate can be
refined.
2 . There is no information in the 4/1/94 CMC response package
detailing the dimensions of the footings for each structure .
Footing dimensions were estimated for the purpose of the
preliminary cost estimate . It was assumed that footings were
installed around the entire perimeter of each slab. The thickness
and width of each footing was estimated based on the size and use
of each building (see item #1 above) . If CMC provides data on
footing dimensions, this aspect of the demolition cost estimate
can be refined.
3 . In the Gillis memo dated 11/16/93 , the Division requested
information on dimensions for all curb/stem/retaining walls and
equipment pedestals that would not be covered by at least 3 ' of
fill in the reclaimed landscape . CMC provided data on what is
