The Ransom Portal is located
approximately 7.5 miles NE of Silverton, in portions of the SW 1/4 of Section 19, T42N,
R6W, NMPM, San Juan County.
Inspection Date: /8 5/97 Inspection occurred from 1 :30 pm - 2:00 pm.
SGC Representative: Larry Perino
DMG Inspector: Wally Erickson
Field Conditions: Overcast and warm, intermittent rain.
Observations: DMG previously conducted bulkhead pre-pour inspection on 6/16/97.
Backfilling and grading of the Ransom Portal appeared to have been completed in
accordance with conditions of the Consent Decree and in accordance with the Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Act and the Hard Rock/Metal Mining Rules and Regulations of
the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board. Portal had been backfilled with native
material and graded to blend with cut slope from county road construction. Eureka Gulch
county road passes within 30' of the portal. Operator stated that tunnel had been
backfilled beyond the zone of intense surface fracturing, to competent rock,
approximately 40' back from portal mouth. Culvert outlet was observed on fill side of
road embankment. Culvert discharge was visually estimated at 10 gpm, discharge
appeared clear, no sample taken. Culvert drains portions of tunnel in front of the
bulkhead, where surface waters enter tunnel through heavily fractured surface rock.
Seeps and/or springs were not evident along the backfilled slope. DRISCO 6" pipe also
extended from county road embankment. DRISCO pipe provided drainage ditch outlet for
road drainage. Backfilled slope appeared stable, no evidence of settling, slumping,
sliding, or erosion was observed.
(end of report)
cc: Allen Sorenson, DMG
Sarah Johnson, CDPHE WQCD
