3 78"
r
George D. Zanoni
P. O. Box 190
ti z ,
Silverton, CO 81433 -41,
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Division of Minerals & Geology „
1313 Sherman St. , Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Technical Revision for Sunnyside Gold Corporation.
Dear Board members:
I write this letter in response to placement of four reinforced
concrete bulkheads by Sunnysi e Gold Corp. (Echo Bay Mines)
at the Sunnyside Mine at Silverton Colorado.
By requiring this company to plug their portals to stop the
discharge of water into an already naturally polluted stream
of heavy metals (surface iron bogs) will be the "straw that
breaks the camels back", as far as the economics of this area
are concerned.
It is well known by the mining community of this region that
the Sunnyside Mine and the surrounding property is far from
being mined out. It is only the low metal prices and heavy
environmental requirements that have caused its shut down.
Being tucked away high in the San Juan mountains, San Juan County
is presently struggling under severe economic stress due to
the demise of the mining industry. Because of its location
there is little hope of a replacement industry and the four
month tourist season does little to relieve the situation.
Although you have no influence on the metal markets of the world,
by allowing the Sunnyside to gate their portals instead of
plugging them would leave the mine in a position to reopen in
the future as metal prices rise, as we all know they will.
Being mining people yourselves, it should be obvious that the
current regulations are too severe and impose too many
restrictions and hardship on an industry that is desperately
trying to survive. I urge your Board to reconsider a number
of regulations and in the process realize that making a mining
company plug portals to a temporarily closed down mine, seals
its future forever, thus destroying the economic base of a
community as well as the contribution of heavy taxes.
Sincerely,
George D. Zanoni
Sept. 27, 1993
