Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
Room 215, Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
May 14, 2012
Re: New Horizon North Mine 0.2010 -089
k a'
MAY 242012
Division of Reclamation
Mining & Safety '
To Whom It May Concern; X am submitting an objection to the approval of this permit. I have
lived around the Nucla area most of my life and have hunted there all of my life. I am in favor of
coal powered power plants and have nothing against coal mining.
What has brought me to write this letter is, I would someday like to retire back in Nucla. Rut, I
am very upset with the way the country is looking as a result of the coal mining in that area. Years
ago when Peabody coal was there, they left a mess and very beautiful farms were turned into rock
and drylands. Now, 1 have returned every year and have seen some of the prettiest farms in the
country left with stockpiles of soils year after year. I work in the oil and gas industry and deal with
the returning of these areas once the minerals have been retrieved. It is very upsetting to see what
is happening in Nucla. All of these farms should have already been in full production and given
back to the landowners. It must be done in a timely manner and I am not seeing that. These
farms were beautiful trees, orchards, and numerous alfalfa fields. All of these areas were
completely irrigated and all 1 am seeing is soils and rocks.
I do not feel that a new permit should be issued to a mining company that has taken years to put
these beautiful farms back into production. This is why I was retiring in Nucla. I have been trying
to buy a small farm there and live my days out there comfortably. But, the scenery has diminished
tremendously from the coal mining industry.
Why haven't the soils been returned? The place that they are working on presently was one of the
prettiest places in the valley and some of the most hay ever produced came from that farm. Now it
is and has been just piles of dirt, eye sores, for more than 8 of the last years I have been here. I
have watched them push nice red dirt off in the pit in years past and now the same thing, whyP
Where did the huge mountain come from on the edge of the coal mine? This was never there. A
school teacher lived up on top and now there is a mountain that has taken away some ofthe most
beautiful views.
[ do not feel that a new permit should be issued to a coal mine that shows so little care and
concern and respect for the landowners and their lives. Thank you for listening.
Art Hutto
281 Holly Lane
Grand Junction, Colorado 81503
