The Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety deals
with the dangers associated with the mine and its workers. However the risks to the adjacent homeowners
and their properties are heightened and mitigation is inadequate. Our safety in the Cedar Heights
Community is compromised.
Shortly after the April 10 blast, the detonation at the Snyder Quarry caused a water main break on
Monitor Rock Lane. These blasts are significant risks to all of our utilities and particularly the
underground water, gas and electrical utilities. Compromise to any of these systems creates a perilous fire
hazard. Our community takes great pride in its participation in the Firewise program for fire prevention.
What is Castle Concrete doing to reduce our fire risk from damage to any underground utilities?
Health safety is a paramount issue. Man-made dust storms occur and are worse when the canyon winds
exceed 60 - 100 mph. The dust eventually settles on local buildings and cars. We breathe in the
contaminated air. What is being done to reduce exposure of sediment- generating materials to wind or
water to the surrounding community?
Our home has damage. Cracks are evident to the ceilings emanating from the central weight - bearing log
beam and there is damage to the indoor Koi pond. The uneven paintings on the walls are telltale signs of
the jolts to the house. You said that Castle Concrete would set up a monitor in our home. However these
measurements do not adequately monitor the real exposure and hidden effects.
Colorado Springs is a prisoner to a deal made a century ago. Recent approval to increase the quarry to
110 acres from 80 acres is very disturbing. Mountaintop removal is destroying once beautiful land. Big
business profits while the private sector pays. With destructive forces at work, socio - economic
considerations for future generations is minimized.
Please take immediate remedial action with Castle Concrete /Snyder Quarry before some catastrophic
problem like fire occurs. Castle Concrete needs to reduce risk to the the Cedar Heights Community and
the greater Colorado Springs / Manitou Springs area.
