Hernandez, Alysha
From: Bowles, Brock
Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2012 8:43 AM
To: Hernandez, Alysha
Subject: FW: Feb 2012 Inspection Report
Brock Bowles
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
303 - 866 -3567 ext. 8142
From: Jim Kiger [mailto:Jim.Kiger @OXBOW.COM]
Sent: Wednesday, February 15, 2012 7:54 AM
To: Bowles, Brock
Cc: Brown, Sandy
Subject: RE: Feb 2012 Inspection Report
Thanks Brock.
I would take issue with the statement that the pond ice has damaged the standpipe on Pond D. I recall that the pipe is
likely Ok and discussing that we have used tar to enhance the sealing of the pipe joint bands on the riser located in the
water. The water flow at the pipe outlet was observed and we think an elbow joint band in the water is weeping
perhaps only less than 1gpm. The tar will often need maintenance and reapplication during the warmer summer
months. That will be the plan for this summer when the weather warms up. We believe that a weeping pipe joint does
not translate to creating any hurry to conduct the maintenance before spring runoff as the integrity of the outlet works
is not compromised with respect to being able handle to the 10 yr event nor is the leak located within the embankment.
During the summer, when inflow is at a minimum, we have to pump down the water to safely access the pipe works
and /or clean the pond of sediment. We plan to clean this pond this summer and working on the pipe joint will occur at
the same time.
Please let me know if there are questions.
James A.
