GIECEIVED
November 3, 2011
Mr. Eric Scott
Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: BOETTCHER QUARRY -- ADDITIONAL INFORM4 O N REGARDING AQUIFER
CHARACTERIZATION
Dear Mr. Scott,
4Od 04 2011
Golder Div of I lam lon,
Associates , - 1 17'7 - 3 v g 8Rd S Y
On behalf of Holcim (US) Inc., Golder is pleased to submit information requested by the Colorado Division
or Reclamation and Mining Safety (DRMS) regarding further characterization of the aquifer and current
uses of groundwater near the Boettcher Limestone Quarry. In the January 24, 2011 letter to Holcim, four
requests for additional information were made by the DRMS; each request is addressed in turn below.
1. "Please determine if this site is located in a classified or unclassified groundwater area. This
may have a significant impact on the groundwater standards that would be applied to the
site."
The Colorado Ground Water Commission has established 8 designated basins and 13 ground water
management districts within Colorado. The Boettcher Limestone Quarry is not located in any of the
basins or management districts classified by the Colorado Ground Water Commission.
2. "What are the uses of the aquifer in the surrounding area ?"
Groundwater wells in the surrounding area are primarily permitted for domestic use. Other uses
noted on the permit applications are commercial, geothermal, household, irrigation, and stock. Also,
it appears that the wells are not all completed in the same aquifer based on the reported completion
intervals, thus the use may be somewhat dependent upon which aquifer is screened and quality of
the water available. Further details regarding the water wells are presented in the response to
request 3, below.
3. "Are there any permitted wells within 1/2 mile of the site? In particular, drinking water or
irrigation wells. If so, these wells should be plotted on a map of the area which also shows the
permit boundary, CKD disposal areas and measured groundwater flow direction."
A search for nearby wells was conducted using the Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR)
online database on May 9, 2011, and included Township 8N, Range 69W, Sixth PM, Sections 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, and 21. This search identified a total of 146 permit applications in this
area. According to DWR staff, this does not mean there are 146 wells because some wells have
been abandoned and others were never installed for various reasons. While not conclusive,
information regarding whether a well exists can be located in the "status" section of the database
records.
Using the permit application status information, Golder determined that 76 wells potentially exist
within 1 /2 mile of the property boundary. Of these, approximately 15 wells are within 'h mile of the
CKD disposal area. These 76 potential wells are shown on Figure 1 along with:
is \10 \81640\ 0100 \addl i nfoaqu iferch a r_fnl -03nov 11 \addl infoaq u iferch a r03nov11.docx
e
Golder Associates Inc.
44 Union Boulevard, Suite 300
Lakewood, CO 80228 USA
Tel: (303) 980 -0540 Fax: (303) 985 -2080 www.golder.com
Golder Associates: Operations in Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America
Golder, Golder Associates and the GA globe design are trademarks of Golder Associates Corporation
Project No.: 103 -81640
