Please provide revised permit pages for the New Elk Mine permit to describe the purpose, location and depth of
this borehole (Rule 2.05.3(2)(b)). Please include in this description the areal extent of the proposed disturbance.
Please discuss whether this activity will involve the use of any mud pits; if so, please describe how much water
may be used to conduct the drilling.
2. Please describe if the hole will be cased, and if so, how. As it appears that this hole may be drilled in somewhat
close proximity to the Purgatoire River, the hole may need to be cased in such a manner so as to prevent
impacts to surface and near - surface aquifers.
3. Will the surface water runoff from this proposed disturbance be directed to an approved sedimentation pond?
If not, will a small area exemption ( "SAE ") demonstration be needed to be inserted into the permit (Rule
4.05.2(3)(a) and (b)(i))?
4. Please commit to updating the permit with a future minor revision to include in the permit the information
described in Rule 2.04.6(3)(a)(iii). Please commit to providing in this future MR copies of driller's logs, core Togs,
geophysical logs, etc that will be obtained in conjunction with the drilling of this borehole.
5. Please describe whether any part of this proposed activity will be located within a "stream buffer zone" as
described in Rule 4.05.18.
6. Please describe whether any part of this proposed activity will be located within an "alluvial valley floor" as
described in Rules 2.06.8 and 4.24.
7. Please provide a revised map or maps showing the location of this proposed borehole. Would Map 11, Sheet 3
be the appropriate to revise? Would any maps need revising as well?
8. Will this borehole be left open for a period of time for water monitoring purposes? If so, please provide revised
pages pertaining to the currently- approved water monitoring program. Please describe the frequency of the
monitoring, the constituents that will be monitored, and how the results of the monitoring will be reported to
the Division.
9. Please provide a plan for the sealing of this borehole and the reclamation of its drill pad and, if constructed, its
mud pit, that conforms to the requirements of Rules 2.05.4 and 4.07.
10. Please provide revised pages pertaining to the New EIk Mine's reclamation cost estimate that update the permit
to include the cost of reclaiming this borehole (Rule 2.05.4(2)(b)).
Thanks, and please contact me if you have any questions.
1
