4
CLIMAX MOLYBDENUM COMPANY
August 25, 2000
Allen Sorenson
Division of Mineral and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Robinson Lake Seep Collection
Dear Mr. Sorenson:
A Subsidiary of Phelps Dodge Mining Company
RECEIVED
kUG 3 1 2000
. Division of Minerals and Geology
7 7`4{23
Climax Mine
Hwy. 91
Climax, Colorado 80429
(719) 486 -2150
Fax (719) 486 -2251
Attached for your information is a plan for improvements to the Robinson Lake seepage collection
system. The attached designs are the result of discussions held with you in inspections held on
May 19, 1997 and September 4, 1997 in which we discussed acceptable approaches to improved
collection of seep waters at the toe of Robinson Reservoir. The plan calls for adding a factor of
safety to existing pollution prevention through expansion of the holding pond for spring snowmelt
surges, extending the height of the cuttoff wall to allow for improved visual checks of the water
level, replacement of the groundwater pumps with more maintainable submersible pumps, and
replacement a culvert between the upper surface ponds. Redundant pipelines will also be
relocated to prevent freezing during winter operations.
Upon completion of construction, Climax will provide the Division with a certification for
construction to the design specifications. Pump specifications will be provided with the water
management equipment list scheduled to be incorporated into the Hydrologic Protection portion
of the pending Climax Mine Financial Warranty.
These improvements do not modify the original function or construction of the cuttoff wall. Climax
plans to install these improvements through the month of September.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (719) 486 -2150, ext. 723.
Sincerely,
Bryce Romig
Climax Molybdenum Company
