I am
writing to provide the input of the City on the application for amendment to the reclamation
permit for the mine which you are hearing on April 13 and 14.
Climax Mine is currently having a profoundly positive impact on our economy and our
community and positive action on this application will only enhance these impacts. Based on
my observations over 17 years I believe that the reclamation efforts that have been made have
been precisely what one would wish for and I want these efforts to continue unabated.
Climax has engaged with our community as well as Summit and Chaffee Counties through the
Community Partnership Panel and has contributed both large amounts of money and
professional economic development guidance for our communities that was not available to
Leadville and Lake County previously. They have earned federal and state awards for
reclamation of the Eagle Park Reservoir and more recently have worked on restoration of a
portion of the Arkansas River. These are efforts which serve to improve water quality for large
portions of Colorado.
Current progress at Climax will immediately create 145 jobs. If restart of production is
announced there will be 380 valuable, new jobs created. Presently, the impacts of construction
contractors and investment are producing extremely meaningful impacts for our community.
This momentum must be encouraged to continue. The local and regional business impacts are
immense and all positive.
I am greatly appreciative of the opportunity to provide comments on this matter. Without
reservation I urge approval of the amendment to the reclamation permit.
Sincerely,
l
Bud Elliott, Mayor
