Fountainhead Parkway, Ste. 290 YVt 1-7 'f Z/
Tempe, AZ 85285
Re: Climax/Ten-Mile ESI
Dear Jay:
Enclosed is the Analytical Results Report for the Climax/Ten-Mile area in
Colorado. Also enclosed is an informal summary of the distribution of the detections.
A decision was filed in the Superfund database today, CERCLIS, which keeps the site
file open based on releases to Ten-Mile Creek.
I have discussed these results with our toxicologists. They indicate most
concentrations in the Site Inspection and the Expanded Site Inspection are below
levels which are currently believed to affect wetland communities and fish. However,
risk evaluation and risk management issues may remain for several miles.downstream
with respect to the aluminum. Molybdenum is currently unregulated in drinking water,
but it is elevated above our background samples as far downstream of the site as Dillon
Reservoir.
.A summary of site information will be sent on to a team which represents diverse
parts of the Superfund program, including State participants. If you have some insights
regarding the aluminum in the fishery, or any other aspects of the data, which will be
relevant to them, please pass them along. This team will make a recommendation to
management regarding a future course and timeframe for work at this site. You may
contact Barry Levene at 312-6807 for information on the timing and outcome of that
effort.
Deferral to existing State permit programs may be an option, if they can be
protective for the issues described above. However, this will not be a recommendation
from the team unless Climax is interested and the State submits a deferral agreement
to the EPA. Please let me know if you need a copy of the deferral policy.
