III- MY77-3 0 a " 772-13
Iii hetstor?e
Associates Technical Memorandum
To: John Hamrick, Randy Whicker (Cotter Corporation) 4109C
From: Susan Wyman, P.E., P.G.
Date: June 18, 2010 "
Subject: Interim water treatment system for the Schwartzwalder Mine
An interim water treatment system is proposed to treat groundwater from Sump 1 at the
Schwartzwalder Mine.
Groundwater will be pumped from Sump 1 using a submersible pump or jet pump capable of
pumping 40 gallons per minute (gpm). The raw water will be piped approximately 25 feet to a skid-
mounted ion exchange (IX) water treatment system provided by Water Remediation Technology
(WRT).
The treatment system will consist of two ion-exchange columns capable of treating up to 50 gpm.
The ion-exchange columns are packed with Zr92 resin, which is specifically engineered for removal
of uranium.
The treated water will be piped from the treatment system through 3-inch HDPE (poly) pipe to a
discharge point on Ralston Creek (Figure 1). For the interim measure, the pipe will be laid at ground
surface, except where it crosses the existing access road where it will be buried and bedded or
culverted. At the temporary outfall on Ralston Creek, the pipe will daylight and the flow will be
routed onto a rip rap apron to prevent excessive scour and erosion at the outfall. Flow will be
visible, measurable, and sampleable at the outfall.
The skid-mounted treatment system will be replaced by a weatherized water treatment system that
will be housed in the existing water treatment plant (WTP) building. Significant engineering design
work has already been performed for the larger water treatment system, pumps, and buried piping
system. The interim system is expected to be in use for four to five weeks, and will remove 0.77 lbs
of uranium per day (0.35 kg/day) based on a flow rate of 40 gpm and an alluvial groundwater
concentration of 1.6 mg/L.
Whetstone Associates, Inc.
243 N.
