-13
OFFICE of ARCHAEOLOGY and HISTORIC PRESERVATION
March 22, 2010
Joseph J. Dudash
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Rm. 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Bowie No. 2 Mine (Permit No. C-1996-083)
Permit Revision Application No. 12 (PR-12)
West Mine Expansion (CHS #56739)
Dear Mr. Dudash:

MAR 2 6 2010
Division of ResclwnsNoa,
Mining and Sa#a{y
Thank you for your correspondence dated March 10, 2010 (received by our office on March 11, 2010)
regarding the subject project.
A search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory database indicates that several cultural resource
inventories have been conducted near the proposed project area and at least three historic properties
are located nearby. The sites include Site 5DT94: the Davis Homestead recorded in 1977, 5DT95: the
Morrell Homestead, recorded in 1977, and 5DT1538: recorded in 2004. For all of these sites, it was
recommended that additional data were needed in order to assess their eligibility for the National
Register of Historic Places (NRHP). How will the effects of mining-induced subsidence affect these
sites? We recommend that the operator avoid these sites or that additional inventory be conducted to
determine the effect of the proposed project on these resources. If site avoidance is not possible, we
recommend further consultation with our office in order to identify options to avoid, minimize, or
mitigate the adverse effect to the sites.
Should human remains be discovered during mining activities the requirements under State law CRS
24-80 part 13 apply and must be followed.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. If we may be of further assistance, please contact Shina
duVall, Section 106 Compliance Manager, at (303) 866-4674 or shina.duvall@chs.state.co.us.
Sincerely,
Edward C.
