Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
I have reviewed BRL's 18 February 2008 responses to my original memo dated 15
February 2008. Below are my responses to the BRL letter with some comments, as
appropriate.
A. Response Accepted. Generally, picking up small pieces of material (rock)
would not be an acceptable method of sample collection due to weathering
and other impurity considerations. In this case, however, these small pieces
are from rock that has just been excavated and weathering at the surface can
be assumed to be negligible. It can be reasonably assumed that these small
pieces of sandstone are from the larger sandstone unit. Therefore, the sample
BRL sent to the lab can be deemed adequate for the Division's purposes.
B. Response Accepted. Based on the information in the laboratory reports
provided by BRL, the sample was prepared and analyzed in accordance with
standard, accepted EPA procedures. Additionally, the sample was analyzed
well within the holding time limits.
C. Response Accepted. See response to B above.
D. Response Accepted Based on the information in the laboratory reports
provided by BRL, all of the constituents that were given a "U" designation
(for below detection limit) had both MDL's (method detection limits) and
PQL's (practical quantitation limit) that were lower than the suspect levels for
those constituents. This means that if any of these constituents were present,
the instrument would have detected them at a sufficiently low level to alert the
Division of a potential problem.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
