Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division has reviewed your 112 conversion application for permit # M- 1997 -064. The conversion
application proposes to convert the 110 gypsum mine from the current 9.73 acres to a phased 112 with
559.22 acres. The following is the Division's adequacy concerns.
1) Exhibit A Legal Description 6.4.1
a) Under legal description the operator states, " The legal description of the land to be
permitted is as follows, 592.42 acres in the fractional part of East %2 of the East % West
of the East % and the West %2 of section 26 ". However, on the General Informational page
1 item # 3, 3.2 the total permitted acres is listed as 559.22, please clarify.
II) Exhibit D Mining Plan 6.4.4
a) The operator plans to utilize the old 110 affected area as temporary top soil storage area
and to also temporarily reclaim the old 110 affected area. As noted during the pre-
operational inspection, the Division encourages any activity related to reclamation.
However if to soil is going to be stored for more than 180 days, GCC as noted in their
reclamation plan must stabilize the stockpile.
b) On Page 7, the last paragraph the operator states, "Depending on the integrity of the
material 3:1 slopes will be maintained throughout mining by pushing deposit with a dozer
on to the mine floor. In the event slope material is too fragile to support equipment, fifty
foot benches will be constructed for every 15 foot of vertical drop. Since GCC'S plan is to
maintain a 3:1 slope during mining and post mining, are these benches going to be
temporary? The maximum depth of mining is going to be 30 feet,( maximum depth of
deposit) according to the current mining plan. If the need arises, the operator will need to
submit a technical revision to change the plan from a 3:1 to the bench mining.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
