MOUNTAIN COAL
?"
COMPANY
LLC.
. A Subsidiary of Arch Western Resources, LW
West Elk Mine
P O Box 591
5174 Highway 133
Somerset, CO 81434
(970) 929-5015
Fax (970) 929-5595
April 5, 2006
Mr. Jim Burnell
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
RE: NOI X-2005-212-06
Dry Fork Exploration Drilling
Dear Jim,
Mountain Coal Company is requesting an amendment to the above noted Notice of Intent to
allow MCC to drill one additional hole on the Dry Fork Coal Exploration License in 2006. The hole,
currently identified as EEE, will be the last hole on this NOI for the Dry Fork area. Additionally, MCC
will be drilling hole SST-1 in 2006 for the last hole in the Lions Mesa area of the NOI. Please refer to
the existing Exploration Plan (4-20-05) and the map and letter submitted to your office on March 14
2006.
• Right of entry is secured with the U. S. Forest Service Road Use Permit dated May 2005,
effective until Dec. 31, 2010. No new roads are required to access the proposed site.
The projected hole size and depth for EEE is the same as those proposed in the Exploration Plan.
The hole diameter would be 6 1/8" to a total depth of 1600'. Other proposed holes within the NOI area
were projected at 2230' to 2360'. The new site is of lesser depth due to its' lower collar elevation.
Drill site development, use, and reclamation would be the same as proposed for other holes
within the NOI area. The site will be selected in consultation with the US Forest Service representative
and placed to minimize disturbance. Utilizing an existing wide spot and undeveloped camp site will
minimize disturbance to the surrounding area.
MCC is planning to conduct the drilling during July and August of 2006 to take advantage of the
driest months of the year and complete reclamation by end of August.
Please contact me if I may provide additional information.
Sincerely,
Wendell A. Koontz
Sr. Mine Geologist
Ark Land Company
West Elk Mine
