INTERNAL MEMO <br />TO: Jim Stark <br />FROM: Jim Burnell <br />SUBJ: Southfield North Dewatering Well <br />14 Oct 2002 <br />Jim, I have reviewed the information provided concerning this well along with the 2001 <br />Annual Hydrology Report for the Southfield Mine. I concur with Kent that preservation <br />of this dewatering well and periodic monitoring can provide valuable information about <br />the hydrologic system at the Southfield Mine in the post-closure period. Where we have <br />had means to monitor the resaturation of underground mines, they have proven to be <br />excellent tools for later evaluation. <br />Presumably the operator will be providing a projection of mine resaturation that includes <br />an estimate of whether the mine will eventually refill and discharge. A well into the mine <br />itself will allow the operator to monitor the progress of the resaturation process. <br />I don't think frequent monitoring is necessary. I would recommend water level quarterly <br />so that we can see if any seasonal patterns are established, and the mine's normal full- <br />suite analysis annually (during the same month each year). Those water level <br />measurements, accompanied by a good, accurate, detailed elevation map of the mine <br />workings will be good tools as the years go by. <br />The AHR itself is fine.
