The project appears to be a straight forward request to convert the existing 110c to a
112c increasing the disturbed acreage from 9.93 acres to 34.13 acres. A review of the application has revealed a
few clarifications and issues that need to be addressed.
1) Per Rule 6.2.1(2)(b), maps must be prepared, signed and dated by a registered land surveyor, professional
engineer or other qualified person. Please submit revised maps that meet the required criteria.
2) Please indicate what direction construction material extraction will proceed on the mine plan map.
3) Please specify the approximate amount of topsoil to be stockpiled along the southern border of the permit
area west of the current permit area.
4) Per Rule 6.4.4 (d), please specify the size of areas to be worked at any one time. Also, please provide an
estimate of the periods of time which will be required for various stages or phases of the proposed
operation.
5) Per Rule 6.4.3(e), the pre - mine plan map must indicate the type of present vegetation covering affected
lands. Please submit a pre-mine plan map that identifies the vegetation that currently exists at the site.
6) It is stated in the reclamation plan that water seepage will be pumped into storage ponds within the pit area.
Please specify where the storage ponds will be located and include their location on the mine plan map.
7) Please clarify the amount of topsoil that will be salvaged at the site and the amount of topsoil that will be
replaced in site reclamation.
8) The proposed seed mix includes four species of wheatgrass and Russian Wildrye. Incorporating native grass
and shrub species in the seed mix may aid in revegetative success. It is also noted that the water table will
be high in certain areas along the proposed pond shoreline, species that are better suited for saturated areas
would aid in overall revegetative success. Species of grass that are suited for shallow water tables include
Tufted Hairgrass, Alkali Sacaton, Basin Wildrye and Cicer Milkvetch. Some examples of shrubs that have
had success in similar settings as the proposed mine include Big Sagebrush, Rubber Rabbit brush, Fourwing
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
