The inspection identified three problems that
needed responses by May 12, 2006.. Below is our response to each of the three problems.
1) A floodplain study dated August 3, 2001 and amended November 13, 2002, satisfies the
DMG's request for Lafarge to supply a stabilization plan, which predicts the hydraulic
conditions of the Colorado River in and adjacent to the affected area during a 100-year flood
event. This study was part of Technical Revision 1, which was approved on Apri122, 2002.
The floodplain study also was submitted to the City of Rifle as part of a Watershed Permit
Application. Additionally, Lafarge has an agreement with the City of Rifle dated June 20,
2001, which seeks to minimize the impact to their water intake structures.
2) Enclosed are two copies of a picture of the outlet structure in the Phase 2 Mining Cell.
Lafarge installed this structure prior to commencing mining in this phase. The other outlet
structure is in Phase 1 and was inspected by the DMG on March 28, 2006. There are
currently only two phases that have been opened for mining.
3) Enclosed are two copies of design drawings that will be utilized for inlet and outlet
structures in each phase of mining. The design is basically the same for both inlet and outlet
with only the crest elevation being different. Also enclosed are two copies of the Approved
404 Permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Please contact me at 303-657-4336 if you have any questions regarding this subject.
Si cerel ,
Mark A.
