CO 80203-2273
Re: Mine Site Weed Control
Dear Matt:
III IIIIIIIII IIII III
999 ~ '
West Elk Coal Company, Inc. (WECC) has noted a few areas around the Mount
Gunnison No. 1 Mine site where Canada thistle have become abundant.
Because the plants are mature and are seeding out, herbicide applications
would be ineffective.
Per the recommendations of the local CSU extension office and Susan Mowry
of the Division, WECC plans to spray these areas with a mixture of 2-4-D and
Banvil or a similar herbicide during late spring or early summer next year. Two
to three applications will be completed. Though this mixture is not expected
to entirely rid the areas of thistle, it is believed to be the best control measure,
barring stronger chemicals which would sterilize the surrounding soil for a
period of time.
Please contact me or Dennis Conn should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Kathleen G.
