SHELTOtJ, Director
October 18, 1985
Terrell Johnson
Colorado Yampa Coal Company
29588 County Road 27
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
Re: Interpretation of Hydrologic Monitoring at Eckman Park - File No. 79-117
Dear Mr. Johnson:
Attached is the Division's interpretation and results of the water sampling
that was conducted at the Eckman Park Mine on July 30, 31 and August 1, 2,
1985. At the end of this letter there are general comments and concerns on
your monitoring plan and probable hydrologic consequences which you need to
consider and respond to.
NPDES Sampling
Three point source discharge samples were taken at pond H, D, and F. These
samples were forwarded to the Department of Health for analysis of total
suspended solids. The results for the pond H, D, and F samples were 35, 12,
and 10 mg/1 TSS. These results appear to be within acceptable TSS limits.
Spoils Aquifer Quality
Groundwater samples were collected from bailed spoils wells at site 026-SP2
and 026-SP1. Both wells showed similar quality characteristics. Dissolved
solids concentrations were moderately high at 2450 and 2750 mg/l, EC for site
SP2 was 2770 umhos and sulfates were 1400 and 1670 mg/1. CYCC (Colorado
Yampa Coal Company] has not submitted any data to MLRD (Mined Land
Reclamation) from these wells for comparison purposes. However, the TDS
concentrations appear to be at or below spoils water concentrations found at
other mines in 20 Mile Park. The concentrations also appear to be in the
range predicted by the leach tests done by CYCC.
Spring Discharges
Numerous springs were noted at the base of the back filled spoils at Eckman
Park and one other spring (identified in 1984) is located east of the Foidel
Creek Mine facilities. The quality of the springs discharge is fair to poor
with the results of selected parameters shown below.
423 Centennial Building, 7313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
