Backfill Stability
Sun Coal has monitored the stability of the Meadows Mine area at least every two weeks,
usually from March until October or Novembr since reclamation in the Fall of 1983. There
are no specific areas of instability.
2. $~ring and Seep Survey
The only seeps active in the Fall of 1991 were coming from the landslide area
west of the loadout. There was one wet area in the top soil storage area and another near
the old scrap storage azea. There was not enough moisture to measure. The seeps on the
mine reclaim had dried up.
3. Hydrology Monitoring Data
Water samples were taken April 15 nd May 10, 1991. There was no dischazge the rest of
the yeaz.
I have enclosed two letters from the Department of Health (June 6 and August 5) with
answers from Sun Coal trying to determine the reason for abnormally high oil and grease at
outfalls 001 and 003. Sun Coal is not tvnning any equipment and the possibility of spill at
two sites is remote, so we believe the contamination is sabotage.
4. Revegetation
Approximately 20 acres of the original Meadows No. 1 pit were graded, topsoiled and
seeded in 1981. Final reclamation was in the Fall of 1983 and eazly Spring 1984.
The vegetation was monitored by Greystone November, 1985 and October, 1988. IMS
monitored the area on July 1990 and September 1991.
In August of 1989 the azea was spot sprayed for thistle under MR4.
The vegetation will again be monitored in July 1993.
