RE: Southfield Mine (C-81-014) 1986-87 Annual Hydrologic Report
Dear Ftr. Weaver:
I have completed a review of the 1986-87 Annual Hydrologic Report furnished me
April 20, 1988 and I have the following comments:
The report satisfies the requirments of Stipulation 6 and the
hydrologic monitoring commitment approved in Stipulation 2 of the
permit;
This report might better be scheduled for delivery August 1 instead
of July 1 so that the quarterly monitoring could be done on the
basis of a calendar year rather than the "unique" system currently
in use. (We discussed this during my last complete inspection. A
minor revision to the permit would probably be all that would be
required).
The discussions of water inflow and of water balance and
consumptive use should incorporate and consider the contribution of
the Corley well to the supply of water imported for the mine. This
well appears from Figure 2 to be utilized to supply the mine, it is
metered; and there appear to be 19 or so acre feet consumed by the
mine for v+hich no source is noted.
The validity of statements made in Part II under Ground Water, e. g.
"...data indicates no significant changes in ground water levels as
a result of mining" cannot be confirmed from the water level plots
presented. The data are limited and do not allow comparison of
current levels with those of the past. The previous data from the
wells should be provided and/or plotted with the current data so
that any trends are recognizable or their absence readily
verifiable.
Tne water quality data for the monitoring wells are similarly
limited. The significance of current water quality and any
variation in quality during the current monitoring year cannot be
determined when only the most recent data are presented. Past
quality data for these wells should be included for comparison.
