III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII,~
STATE OF COLURf~D0
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OFNATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
DATE: September 22, 1987
T0: Michael S. Savage ~~/
FROM: Peter V. O'Connor
RE: WALDEN COAL COMPANY BOURG STRIP VEGETATION SAMPLING;
PERMIT N0. C-81-021
As requested, Dave Berry and I conducted vegetation sampling of this mine site
on Wednesday, September 9, 1987. A total of eight transects were run; this is
three more than was run in 1986. A variety of areas with different slopes and
aspects were chosen within the reclaimed East Dump for these eight transects.
Attached are the field sheets and a summation form for these transects. When
reviewing the attached, please consider the following observations.
1: The area was exceedingly dry. The normal summer thunderstorms
never materialized this year resulting in some very dry
conditions. This resulted in grasses still in their vegetative
stage without seed heads making identification nearly
impossible. Therefore, all of the wheatgrass species were
clumped together as "Agropyron Species" rather than being
broken into individual wheatgrass species. I would recommend
againsty evaluating for species diversity because of this
clumping situation.
2. Because of the dry conditions, the Russian thistle (SalSOla
kali) was dried to the point that I considered this material as
"Titter" rather than an actual species: It was impossible to
discern which thistles could be considered "live" or "dead";
therefore, they were all considered "dead" thereby acting as a
litter material:
3: The shrub transects were inadvertently run for only 40 meters
rather than the usual 50 meters. I do not believe that
transects 10 meters shorter substantially impacted the results
for shrub density.
4. Depth of topsoil was determined by digging soil holes with a
soil spade. Once a change in soil color was observed, a
measurement of total depth was taken. This soil depth
determination was made near the start of each transect and is
reported in decimeters:
cc: Dave Berry
srs
2415E - -
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
