SHELTON, Director
MEMORANDUM
April 1987
T0: Sue Mowry $~~
FROM: Jim Pendleton
RE: Blue Ribbon erl ench Stability Monitoring
I have reviewed rterly portal bench stability monument monitoring
report, forwarded to you by Larry Reschke, PE, engineer for Western
Associates. The monitoring report shows minor settlement of the bench
stability monuments (maximum observed settlement = .07'). As such, the portal
bench continues to be stable following its reconstruction of sveral years ago.
Last fall we cited the operator for improperly grading the top of the portal
bench during final reclamation. I was concerned that ponded water might
infiltrate, staurating the bench, which might encourage instability. I would
be interested in the water level observations in the piezometers, in addition
to the survey results for the monuments. Please ask the operator to monitor
the piezometer levels and submit the results for Iqy review. It will be
important to repeat the piezometer observations at the peak ofthe melt artd
runoff season in late May and June.
cc: Bob Liddle
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
