In order to properly design
repairs to these areas, specifically the upper conveyor bents and the screening
plant areas, shallow core drilling must be conducted. Two to three holes, no
more than 40 ft. deep will be drilled at each site. The holes will then be
backfilled with the cuttings. All sites can be drilled from the existing access.
West Elk Mine's new access road has settled, creating a depression above the
lower fill wall. A hole will be drilled at this site as well, to determine if a water
saturated horizon exists. Geotechrucal engineers from Envirocon; Inc. and
GeoWest (the designing engineers) have inspected the site and believe it is likely
just settling of the road base under the asphalt. Depending on the outcome of
this test hole, the site may either be excavated, recompacted and resurfaced or
the depression merely resurfaced and/or the ditch to the south lined.
MCC has removed all of the underground storage tanks from the West Elk Mine
site. The waste oil tank was removed in 1990 and the five petroleum product
tanks removed in 1992. The Colorado Department of Health is requiring
additional soil sampling around the perimeter of both sites to verify that the
plume of contamination is coned to the immediate areas. On April 23rd up to
five shallow holes will be drilled and sampled at these sites, west and north of
the existing warehouse/shop building. The results will be submitted in MCC's
follow-up Corrective Action Plan to the Department of Health, along with
another request for closure.
~rnccrczo.
