SNELTON, Dlrxtor
'~ X876 ~`
Ric naro D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: June 15, 1983
To: Stone King File
FROM: Jim Herron
RE: Pre-permitting Meeting
On June 10, 1983, a meeting was held to discuss collection of baseline
soils, vegetation, and wildlife information. In attendance were Mr. Sam
Arentz of Storm King Mines, Robert Pearson from Gibbs and Hill, Inc.,
Jerry Koblitz and Rany Schroeder of Espy-Huston and Jim Herron
representing the Division.
INr. Schroeder stated that information had already been gathered on site
for vegetation in the previous two years. It was his understanding that,
Dased on the information gathered and a previous meeting with the MLRD
that the re vegetation success standards could be based on technical
documents. Mr. Schroeder went on to explain that the area proposed to be
disturbed was composed of a Pinyon-Juniper community, overgrazed range,
and cropland. He was informed that the cropland standard would be based
on actual production from adjacent areas of similar cropland. He then
submitted a report on data collected last year in which 15 samples of
cover, production, and woody plant density were collected. Following
this discussion, I told the Storm King representatives that I was
presently unable to confirm what had been discussed and decided in the
previous meeting and what if any additional vegetation data should be
collected this summer. It was decided that I would discuss this problem
with MLRD personnel, then call Mr. Schroeder during the week of June 13,
1983. A subsequent memo will be written concerning that conversation.
Soils baseline information was the next topic discussed. Mr. Schroeder
stated that an order 2 SCS soil survey had been completed on the whole
area, and that a site specific survey had been completed on the surface
facilities area. A copy of the soils description by Intermountain Soils
was submitted.
Some soils samples had already been collected. I explained that two
groups of samples should be taken for each 25 acres of each soil type to
be disturbed. Une group of samples is to include a sample from each
major horizon. The other group is to be a composite from at least four
locations by six inch increments. Soil samples are planned to be
collected during the week of June 2U, 1983.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
