The
conceptual design and stability analysis were presented in
the San Luis operating permit amendment. As discussed in
Section D.6 of the permit amendment and associated adequacy
responses, prior to construction of the lift, geotechnical
testing of the in-situ tailings material will be perfoYmed to
verify the conceptual design and stability analysis. ~'he
following is a brief outline of the field investigations and
engineering design:
Conceptual Layout
As presented'in the permit amendment, preliminary lift
geometries were developed and analyzed for stability u$ing
anticipated material properties. The stability analysis
included an assessment of liquefaction potential and
consolidation based on the expected tailings beach mat@rial
characteristics. The results of the original stability
analysis and the probable raise geometry were reviewed to
locate required field investigations.
Fiel3 Investigations
During the field investigations, cone penetrometer testiing
(CPT) of the main embankment beach area will be conducted.
The CPT data, including bearing resistance, sleeve fridtion,
pore pressures, and pore pressure decay values, will be
collected to determine in-situ tailings density, liquefaction
susceptibility, and consolidation characteristics.
Final Design
Information collected during the field investigation will be
incorporated into the conceptual layout and preliminary
engineering design to finalize the stability analysis. The
raise geometry and the construction sequencing will then be
completed.
A.S(lBS/DIANY OF BA7TI F,1fOUKLAIN GOLD COMPANY
P.O.
