AREA C~ECLARAA?!
Off! DIVIS!pf~
Dear Tom:
In response to your question regarding the capacity of the (upper) West Ridge
Waste Disposal Area in your May 6, 1987, letter to John Menke, the area was de-
signed to contain approximately 130,000 cu. yds. (158,000 tons), Construction
designs for the West Ridge Disposal Area and conceptual designs of the East
Ridge and Life-of-Mine disposal areas were prepared by engineers of Golder Asso-
ciates (formerly Geo-Hydro Consulting) and approved by the Division during the
Summer of 1983 (see Map Nos. 6A-lA through 6A-lE in Volinne 6A).
The Western Slope Carbon Wash Plant may again take gob from the old disposal
acea, but if they do not, the West Ridge area has ample room for the material in
the old area. Assuming approximately 3,000 cu. yds. (conservatively) of gob
were disposed each month, the gob from the old area was disposed there, and none
was shipped to the wash plant, the West Ridge Disposal Area would reach its ca-
pacity during December, 1988. CWI would submit supplemental designs for the
East Ridge Waste Disposal Area at least three months prior to reaching the pro-
jected capacity of the West Ridge area.
CWI is presently working in the "intermediate" portion of the West Ridge Dispos-
al Area. The capacity of the intermediate area is approximately 52,500 cu. yds.
(63,800 tons). The capacity of this area would be reached this summer based on
[he above assumptions. Prior to reaching the intermediate area capacity, CWI
would prepare the upper portion of the West Ridge Disposal Area. Vegetation
would be removed, drainage established, topsoil and subsoil salvaged and stored,
and the pile foundation prepared according to the approved designs.
Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have further questions,
Sincerely,
COLORADO WESTMORELAND INC.
Kathleen G.
