This
letter also serves as a follow-up to our telephone
conversation of February 5, 1993, concerning the results
reported by Core Laboratories on the December 10, 1992 post-
detox sample.
As specified in TR-010, samples are collected five to nine
days apart; a minimum of one sample per week is sent to Core
Laboratories for outside lab verification. The cyanide levels
in the tailings exiting the INCO circuit are monitored on a
30-day rolling average calculated weekly.
Core Laboratories reported cyanide values of 12.6 ppm CN-wad
and 22.7 ppm CN-total for the December 10, 1992 post-detox
sample. The Core Labs report was received at the San Luis
Project on February 4, 1993.
This sample was part of a bi-weekly sampling event. As
specified in TR-006, cyanide values are calculated or the
process point samples collected during a bi-weekly ampling
event. The calculations are based on methods outli ed in the
May 1992 cyanide chemistry report by Dr. Adrian Smi h. The
calculated cyanide value range for this sample is 1.53-2.21
ppm CN-wad and 1.61-2.29 ppm CN-total. The values reported by
Core Lab are suspect. Core Labs verified the raw dalta. The
sample cannot be re-analyzed due to an insufficient volume of
sample remaining. A post-detox sample also collect~d on
December 10 and analyzed on-site showed 2.19 ppm CN~wad and
3.97 ppm CN-total.
As specified in TR-010, a 30-day rolling average of the
cyanide concentrations exiting the INCO circuit is calculated
weekly. Due to the suspect nature of the December 0 post-
detox sample analyzed by Core Labs, the maximum calculated
cyanide values were used in the 30-day rolling avergges. The
30-day rolling average calculations are enclosed.
P.O. BOX 310 SAN LUIS, COLORADO 81152-03f0 (719) 672-3362 FAX (719) 672-3363
