~~~~ ~~== =~ ~ ~~~ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
TWIN PINES
TECH. REv. 3
PAGE 1
TECHNICAL REVISION NO. 3
COAL PROCESSING WASTE AREA
SECTIDN 2.06.10 OF THE APPLICATION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A technical revison for a "Coal Processing Waste Area" is being
submitted at this time to provide for the disposal of material
hand picked from coal processed for domestic consur:ption. Prior
to this date the hand picked material was processed for possible
sale at a reduced rate. Plans have been formulated to increase
the efficiency of hand cleaning domestic coal products, thus
increasing the by-product. To alievate accumulation of the
material on site, a disposal area is required.
The material picked from the coal is generally a band of white
rock about 2" thick, which is characteristic of the Brookside
Coal seam. In areas of the mine, coal will adhere to the band of
ock _Processing_will_tend to shear the coal from the rock band.
The rock does weather to a fine grained material.
Long range planning for the mine may require an additional
disposal area for underground development waste and/or additional
coal processing waste. Coal cleaning facilities for the mine have
been investigated. An economically feasible cleaning unit has not
been found to fit the needs of the mine but is still being
considered in long range planning.
DESCRIPTION OF PROPDSED AREA
The proposed "Coal Processing Waste Area" lies ad,iacent to the
Twin Pines Coal Sales Site in a previously disturbed area
utili-<ed by the original Twin Pines Mine. ( Refer to the drawing
"Coal Processing Waste Area", attached). The area was within the
origanal Twin Pines permit boundry and was reclaimed in 1982 by
Twin Pines Coal Company. Additional reclamation was completed
ad,iacent to the South Dak Creek Channel in 1987 by the abandoned
mines program. Reclamation of the site created an artificial
valley which appears to be ideal for a disposal site. The area is
protected from runoff with a ditch and berm above the original
highwall and from South Dak Creek by a large mound between the
creek channel a~d__the--va~lley.~-The en.tire_area is in _previously
disturbed ground,~~tri_pped for access t_o the origina'. Twin Pines
~Min~ Vegetation cover is sparce. - - - - - - --
Three test holes were excavated in the proposed area to observe
the insitu sub-soils and observe ground water conditions. The
holes were excavated to a depth of 8 to 12 ft. or to bedrock. No
ground water was observed in the test holes. The material was
generally fine grained sandy to silty soil with granite cobbles
increasing with depth. Some mine spoil existed in test holes 2
and 3. Test logs are shown on the drawing. A general geological
section of the proposed area is shown on the drawing.
1
