Banta.
Division Director
RE: Water Monitoring Plan portion of 1990 Annual Reclamation Plan
Colowyo Mine, Permit No. C-81-019
Dear Mr. Kiger:
The Division has reviewed the Water Monitoring Plan portion of the
1990 Annual Reclamation Report and generally find it to be
acceptable.
We are concerned that analysis of trends in water quality is
hampered by changes in well locations and by the fact that various
water constituents have not been analyzed consistently over the
years. Specifically, on the tables provided, could you give the
reasons for gaps found in the data. For instance, in some cases
field parameters were measured while no flow was noted. In other
cases, no measurements were apparently taken. A full suite of
water monitoring measurements are required according to the terms
of both the Division and Colorado Health Department permits.
In the future, should beavers dam a stream at an existing
monitoring site, Colowyo might consider sampling above the area of
ponded water, after obtaining Division approval for a change in the
monitoring plan.
The Gossard Well No. 1 continues to display high levels of iron.
Colowyo might consider procedures to insure accuracy in sampling
and, if it appears that sampling is accurate, to try and explain
the high iron levels found in Gossard Well No. 1.
If you have any questions, please contact either myself or Larry
Routten.
Sincerely,
Stephen F. Wathen
Reclamation Specialist
