Price
Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Re: 1985 Annual Hydrology Report
Dear Randy:
(_,. ,",
~_ ~ :,, - .
.1 ' .;
FED ? 19~3n
~ ...
~,.: ... .. _ 1
The Bear Coal Company, Inc., hereby submits our Annual
Hydrology Report for 1985, for the Bear Number Three Mine.
On November 8, 1985, the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Division approved a technical revision to our mining permit which
allows Bear to discontinue monitoring alluvial well AA2. In ad-
dition the revision reduces the frequency of monthly sampling to
quarterly sampling, and calls for an annual water sample from
each well be tested by a laboratory instead of quarterly as had
been done before. In accordance with this revision, Bear Coal
Company did not make alluvial well field tests in the month of
December, 1985, nor was a sample submitted to a laboratory for
testing in the 4th quarter of 1985.
Therefore, please find the following:
(a) Alluvial Well field test results for the period January
thru November, 1985.
(b) Quarterly alluvial well sample results for the first
three quarters of 1985.
As you are aware, due to it's location, the Bear Coal Com-
pany was forced to suspend sampling of alluvial well AA2 begin-
ning in March of 1985.
During the year, there was a discharge from our sediment
pond on March 23, 1985. This discharge was caused by an
unusually rapid spring snow melt. We do not anticipate that this
will be a problem in the future, and a copy of our report to the
Colorado Department of Health is enclosed.
Bear Coal Company management estimates that our operation
consumed approximately 700,000 gallons of water in 1985. During
1985, there were no outflows from the Bear Number Three Mine.
