Long
Boulder, CO 80306 Division DueUOr
Re: 1995 Annual Hydrology Report, Bourg Mine, C-81-021
Dear Ms. James:
The Division received Walden Coal Company's Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) for 1995
on January 16, 1996. The Division has reviewed the report and has the following comments:
1. The currently approved plan requires that Walden Coal Company "examine the
reclaimed area for springs and seeps:' No comments or text detailing the result of
this examination were included with the 1995 AHR. Please include, in each year's
AHR, details about when this examination occurred, what areas were examined, and
the results of this examination for springs and seeps.
2. j The currently approved sampling plan requires that SAR be calculated and reported.
No SAR values were reported for the three lab samples analyzed during 1995.
3. Well 30-C has a reported iron value of 8.08 mg/1, total recoverable. It is likely chat
the well casing is the cause of this relatively high value. Furthermore, although the
plan is not specific, the Division is more interested in the amount of dissolved iron
with regard to ground water.
4. September 1995 water levels in well 30-C have risen some 2.5 feet since the fall of
1994. Some fluctuation due to variations in precipitation is expected. However,
water levels in well 33-B show a more curious variation. Well 33B has been
observed as dry in all previous reports since at least 1991. Spring 1995 water levels
indicate a column of water at least 10 feet above the bottom of the well, possibly due
to heavy spring precipitation.
With the exception of the iron value, reported values are very near the previously defined
range of values and no discernable impact due to mining can be identified at the present
time.
