The variPtiP;; specified are superior in
adaptability to this yeograph.ic region. Seeding rates are e>:pressed
as "porinds of pare live seed (Pi,S) per acre," which is the only basis
for comparing price and quality of different sources of balk seed.
Broadcast seeding will deliver approximately 75 to 80 live seeds per
sri~.:are foot, apportioned according to the percentages in the mix. The
nerc:entagPS reflect "numbers of live seed," therefore, not "weight."
Tliis will prove to be a challenging project, even with the relatively
short slope lengttrs planned for the demonstration area. It will. be
important to achieve soil coverage (about 1/4 inch) of as much seed as
possible t,o optimize the rate of seed germir.at.icn and scibsequent
seedling establishment. Note: Hydraulic application of seed will not
prove satisfactory if not, followed by some method of soil manipulation
to cover some of ttre seed. Hydraulic application of a mulch over
cininc:orporated seed will not be sufficient.
It's .important to observe the appro, riate seeding window, as well.
Contrary to the information in the existing plan, the best time to
plant a nonirrigated native grass mix is between late October arrd the
end of April--anytime the soil is riot. frozen or wet--as long as the
site is stable. A fall seeding is made after a hard freeze, i.horeby
prevPr.t.ing yerrnination. This is referred Co as a "dormant snc~ding."
This is preFcrr~,d in m^st cnr;•s t„ ,- ;grin, sa~PdinO, all thin;n ta,=ing
Penal.
^hpri,.y
western vheaCgrass
little bluestem
sinr~~~al.s aroma
i~iuebunch wliear,ra::s
iridian ricegrass
slender wlceatgrass
eariet~ Percent
of.
