Cattany
Division DIEQC[Or
Natural Resource Trustee
SUBJECT: McClane and Munger Canyon Mines (Pemlit Nos. C-1980-004 and C-1981-020)
2005 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) Review
I have reviewed the 2004-2005 Water Year AHR for DdcClane/Munger Mines. One report is
submitted for both mines since they are in close proximity, and it appears that the surface water
and groundwater monitoring programs are combined.
With regard to surface water, I generally agree with our Division's previous findings that mine
discharge will have a small impact on East Salt Creek.. This is consistent with the Probable
Hydrologic Consequences discussion in the permit docLlment and the data reported in the 2005
AHR. Data presented in the 2005 AHR show that samples collected from East Salt Creek above
and below the mine site are generally the same for all parameters. I have the following minor
comments with regard to the surface water data presentation.
On page 5 of the AHR, CDPS Discharge Monitoring Reports are mentioned (as indicated
in your preliminary review). It would be helpful to include a brief summary under pond
discharges (including outfall 002) of whether or not any CDPS effluent criteria were
exceeded during the water year.
2. Since mine water will enter East Salt Creek downstream from SW-I following
installation of Culvert P, It would make sense to include sampling SW-1 during mine
discharge events rather than exclude it.
With regard to groundwater, I recommend that the discussion in the AHR be expanded and the
permit document(s) may need to be clarified or supplemented with additional information.
The approved monitoring program for McClane includes wells GW-1 and GW-3. The
monitoring program for Munger includes wells GW-l, GW-3, and GW-6. The current approved
programs include quarterly monitoring for field parameters only (temperature, pH, specific
conductance, and static water level). Six alluvial wells were drilled and samples were collected
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Ceologiwl Survey
