-. iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
~~~°~~ _ STATE OF CC-~~URADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
August 10, 1987
Mr. William Balaz
Kaiser Steel Corporation - Coal Group
102 South Tejon, Suite 800
Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903
Re: Chimney Rock Mine - 1986 Annual Hydrologic Report - File No. C-81-023
Dear Mr. 8alaz:
The Division has completed the review of the referenced report. The report
indicates that at this time, the Chimney Rock Mine is not impacting the
surface or ground water regimes.
During this review, two areas of concern were identified for future monitoring
and reporting:
1. As noted in correspondence dated May 7, 1986, the operator should
conduct an alluvial spring and seep survey of the reclaimed East
Pit. Mine personnel should walk the east side of this reclaimed
area shortly after Stollsteimer Creek peak flow has occurred. Any
springs or seeps issuing from this area should be plotted on a
map. An estimate of discharge should also be made at the time of
the field visit. If no springs or seeps are observed, this should
be noted as this is an equally important observation.
2. Alt coal operators in Colorado are being actively encouraged to
structure the data collection period around a water year (October 1
through September 30). Organizing the data collection period
around a water year will not change the times when data is
collected or the time of report submittal. It will merely change
the beginning and end time of the data collection period.
Operators are encouraged to use the water year format to allow for
ease of data comparison between mining operations, and between mine
sites and national data bases. Furthermore, the concept of a water
year data collection period is founded in accepted hydrologic
principles.
Kaiser Coal is requested to change the data collection reporting
period from a calendar year as currently done to a water year.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
