Long
Division Director
RE: Technical Adequacy Review for New 112 Permit Application,
M-96-060, Firestien Pit
Dear Mr. Gregg,
This letter is being written to address technical issues of concern to the
Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) with regard to your new permit
application #M-96-060, Firestien Pit. The following questions must be
adequately resolved before the Division can make a decision regarding permit
approval.
A) Final lake area. In Exhibit D it is stated that the final lake
area will be equal to 80 acres. This is contradicted in Exhibit E
by a statement describing the final total lake area as 56.3 acres.
Please clarify this.
B) Maximum angle of excavation. During the pre-operational
inspection, it was stated that mining will not occur at a 3H:1V
angle, but will form more traditional highwalls for a short period
of time as topsoil and overburden are stripped and the deposit
excavated. This contradicts statements made in the application
(Exhibit D, Mining Plan). Please clarify the uncertainty regarding
how mining operations will be conducted and commit to a specific
maximum slope which will be formed during the course of mining.
The final decision date for the application is November 21, 1996.
Please contact our office as soon as possible so that these issues can be
resolved adequately prior to the decision date. If you have any further
questions, I can be contacted at (303) 866-3567.
Sincerely,
~~~ .~~~'
Christina L. Kamnikar
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Carl B.
